Prof. YEO Puay-Hwa Jesvin |

Prof. Jesvin Yeo, trained at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London, practices as a multidisciplinary designer, educator and researcher based in Southeast Asia. Her research and design interests relate to applied historical values with contemporary cultural developments in areas of “Asian Material Culture”, “Asian Studies” and “Typography”. Particular interests and vernaculars investigate the intersections of cultural elements with values motivation, as well as methodological experiments with communication through visual mediums and applied technology. As foundations of her research, Prof. Yeo employs design approaches as a means to capture understanding, while probe examining and critiquing the world around her. Specifically, she believes that through design we canconstructively and progressively questionthe social, cultural, historical, technological and formal phenomenal norms surrounding us daily and constantly.
Prof. Yeo’s research works are well-established at both international and national level. Besides being the author of six books, including award winning books: ‘Negotiating Symbols across Time and Place’, ‘Visual/Senses’ and ‘Vanishing Crafts’. Her research work is published internationally, including journal articles, conference papers and books published, in domains of Asian Cultures, Traditional Crafts, Typography and Book Design. International Exhibitionshad also been held at museums and galleries in Berlin, London, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Tokyo, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Beijing. Amongst thirty-eight international design awards she had received include the prestigious German Design Award, Red Dot Award (Communication Design), A’ Design Award, and iF Communication Design Award.
Prof. Yeo serves as Vice Chair at Singapore Society of Asian Studies, as well as an organizer of the Women in Photography Symposium 2014. She is also currently active with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) serving as the Chair (Poster), and committee member in Special Interest Group on the Design of Communication (SIGDOC) Conferences. Prof. Yeo also serves as associate editor of six international journals on Design Education, Design Principles & Practices, Book Design and Humanities.
